The 5 Important Facts You Need to Know About COVID-19

Several weeks have passed since China reported its first case of a type of Coronavirus outbreak. This virus is now properly known as COVID-19. Since then, many infections have also begun to spread in different countries, causing alarming rates of casualties that has caused people to “panic buy” due to possibilities of food shortages and city lock-downs.

Today, there are now over 125,000 reported cases of COVID-19 and a death toll of 4,749, but 68,000 patients have recovered. As of March 12, 2020, the World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 as a pandemic.

As one who can be prone to this disease, it’s important for you to be informed about this illness. Are there specific people who have higher risk in getting infected? What can you do to prevent contracting the virus? Here are five things you need to know about COVID-19:

Even though the first case of COVID-19 was first reported from Wuhan, China, this doesn’t mean that it would transmit only to those living in that country, let alone Asia. Those with Asian descent are not more likely to get the virus than any other person regardless of where they’re from or who they are. Any disease can make anyone sick.

Fact 2: There are some people who have higher risk of getting COVID-19

If ever you have come close in contact with people who are diagnosed or known to have COVID-19, you have a higher chance of contracting the disease yourself. There are also others who have also recently been in areas where there is ongoing spread are at risk for transmitting the virus. It’s best to get checked if you have been in areas where this disease has been reported to have affected.

Fact 3: What are the signs & symptoms of COVID-19?

Patients who are diagnosed with COVID-19 experience mild to severe respiratory illness with the following symptoms:

• Fever
• Cough
• Shortness of breath
• Difficulties in breathing

The symptoms can appear 2-14 days after exposure. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death. If you develop any of these symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19, be sure to seek medical advice at once.

Fact 4: What can you do to prevent COVID-19?

Since the disease can be transmitted from person to person, the following are several standard recommendations to prevent the spread of infection:

• Wash your hands frequently.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• When you’re sick, stay at home.
• Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash immediately.
• Clean and disinfect touched objects and surfaces.

Fact 5: Are there other ways to fight against COVID-19?

Yes. There are other ways to lessen the risk of getting the disease. You can strengthen your immune system by living a healthier lifestyle by practicing healthy routines:

• Exercise indoors.
• Eat healthy food.
• Drink a lot of water.
